How the trick works

  1. Split the 2-digit number into tens and ones.
  2. Multiply each part.
  3. Add the two answers.

Worked examples

34 × 6: split 34 into 30 + 4.

30 × 6 = 180 and 4 × 6 = 24, so 204.

57 × 4: split 57 into 50 + 7.

50 × 4 = 200 and 7 × 4 = 28, so 228.

83 × 7: split 83 into 80 + 3.

80 × 7 = 560 and 3 × 7 = 21, so 581.
